The Russian crewmen had no economic reason to explore efficiently. But they had a lifestyle incentive to spend 3 years on a 4-month project! Guess What They Threw Away? Yet even in three years of drilling, the Russians missed the grand prize. Oh, they found some copper. But a young Canadian geologist from the new exploration team examined material from strata the Russians ignored ... and made a suggestion. He said, 'You know, we should assay this. For GOLD." They did. It was! It turned out that what the Russians had regarded as waste contained 150,000 ounces of gold. They were literally throwing away a gold mine to get at the copper. Think of it another way. Remember what happened in the computer business, when IBM farmed out the software for its PC to a small-time entrepreneur named... Bill Gates?

They're kicking themselves now, of course, but it's increasingly typical for the knowledge-intensive parts of any business to get outsourced.

This is exactly what's happening now in mining. The knowledge-intensive parts of the business are breaking off from the big corporations. And these new, information-based mining companies are where the action is. They're "juniors" now 0 but they'll be the new blue chips of the global gold rush.
